2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are anything but new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. However, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the broader culture is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming looks particularly strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues enable a host of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far.

If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
