Doris Makes Irish Selection While McCarthy Left Out

Rugby team announcement update

Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has selected skipper Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall Tests, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.

Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province player Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, and number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new member in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to the US as "cover".

Following facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented Farrell, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced squad, Leinster's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again vie for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as the coach opting against calling up Leinster's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's three league games this season and featured in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Munster lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to deputise for Doris should the skipper does not regain fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
