French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu Tenders Resignation After Under a 30-Day Period in Power

The French Premier Lecornu has handed in his resignation, less than a day after his government team was announced.

The presidential office confirmed the news after Lecornu met Macron for an hour on Monday morning.

This surprising decision comes only less than a month after he was given the PM role following the dissolution of the prior administration of François Bayrou.

Parties across the board in the French parliament had sharply condemned the composition of the new government, which was very close to the previous one, and promised to block its approval.

Pressure for Snap Polls and Political Unrest

A number of factions are now calling for a snap election, with others demanding Macron to also leave office - despite the fact that he has consistently affirmed he will not resign before his term ends in five years from now.

"Macron needs to decide: parliament's dissolution or leaving office," said Sébastien Chenu, one of prominent members of the National Rally.

Lecornu - the previous military head and a ally of the President - was the fifth French PM in less than 24 months.

Background of Government Turmoil

French politics has been highly unstable since mid-2024, when sudden national voting resulted in a no clear majority.

This has posed obstacles for every premier to secure enough backing to enact new laws.

Bayrou's government was rejected in September after parliament voted against his austerity budget, which aimed to slash government spending by 44 billion euros.

Economic Challenges and Stock Response

The French shortfall stood at 5.8% of GDP in 2024 and its government debt is more than the total economic output.

That is the number three debt level in the European monetary union after Greece and Italy, and equal to almost 50,000 euros per person.

Share prices dropped in the Paris bourse after the news of Lecornu's resignation emerged on Monday.
