In “It’s a Deal”, a flashback reveals that popular personality Alastor, the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his human life. Being aware he was headed to the underworld, he made contact with the afterlife in advance to secure a powerful role there. Rosie, the charismatic leader the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the strongest Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his soul.

This raises the question: In what way is this character sufficiently strong to raise Alastor above every other Demonic Sinners?

“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the first stepping stone in a much bigger story that encompasses a great deal, moving into season 3,” the showrunner explains. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she that powerful? The answer could be various factors, but the answer is in season three. I am thrilled for people to see it.”

It is uncertain the duration viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have approved seasons 3 and 4, but the creator often remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and later seasons are undated. Nevertheless, she states holding off on those details is a crucial aspect of maintaining season 2’s focus in the right places.

“The difficulty of any agreement with demons, or narratives that have mysteries, is providing the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that gradually, and letting that be gratifying,” she says. “So I'm very excited.”

Mysteries Resolved in Season 3

The creator promises that the upcoming season will tackle the questions followers have been asking, such as why Rosie ordered Alastor to disappear for seven years, which diminished his influence in the infernal realm.

“The entire seven-year span, and the deals these humans are doing, and all that — it's feeding into a larger story,” she reveals.

In the meantime, the origin story episode offers a further look into how the core cast of Demonic Sinners looked like as humans, the second after seeing Sir Pentious’ historical mortal appearance in episode 2. The creator explains that a lot of thought was put into these character designs.

“The mortal forms of these personas hold great significance,” she notes. “They vary from looking really different from their demon form to looking almost identical. With Pentious, the initial design we see, there was some internal discussion within the team between going with something that symbolizes the personality, versus going with something that's very time-period accurate. We leaned toward making something that just felt like it was him.”

She says the primary controversy over Pentious’ human design was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one typically had long hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we think the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We kind of provided the rationale that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we design the mortal forms of these personas […] it is a very enjoyable process to investigate and determine. I'm excited for fans to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
